2005 Sun Fun Festival Wraps Up

June 7, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – This year marked the highest-ever number of participants in the annual Sun Fun Festival pageants, with 57 young ladies competing for the title of Miss Sun Fun USA 2006 or Miss Sun Fun Teen USA 2006. For the first time, the winners of the Sun Fun pageants will compete for the Miss South Carolina USA and Miss South Carolina Teen USA titles and then possibly go on to the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants.

The pageants were part of the Hawaiian Tropic 54th annual Sun Fun Festival®, which concluded Monday.

The newly crowned Miss Sun Fun USA 2006, Joycelyn McElveen of West Columbia, made history as the first black woman to win the festival title. She also was voted Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants. Joycelyn is the daughter of Joyce McElveen and attends the University of South Carolina (Aiken). Kristen Oates of Myrtle Beach won the title of Miss Photogenic.

Marlana Carter of Tega Cay won the Miss Sun Fun Teen USA 2006 title as well as Miss Photogenic. She is a junior at Fort Mill High School. McKenzie Byrd of Myrtle Beach took home the title of Miss Congeniality.

Miss Bikini Wahine also was crowned during the festival. Reid McLeod of West Columbia was named Miss Bikini Wahine 2006 as well as first runner-up in the Miss Sun Fun USA pageant. Her mother, Judi McCleod, won the same title in 1979. The Miss Bikini Wahine competition is a preliminary to the Miss Hawaiian Tropic contest.

The U.S. Army’s famous parachute team, the Golden Knights, sky-dived onto the beach to kick off the Myrtle Beach Pavilion Sun Fun Air Show Saturday. Following the Golden Knights, festival goers were treated to an aerobatic performance featuring Scott Gerow Air Shows, Eric Beard’s Russian Thunder, Jim Varden Air Shows, Iron Eagle and an A-10 demonstration team.

New to this year’s festival lineup was the free Miller Lite/Smirnoff Ice Concert Series on a brand-new oceanfront stage at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion. Highlights included a performance by the first winner of “Nashville Star,” Buddy Jewell, a reunion of the Swingin’ Medallions and many others.

Another new event was a Gospel Fest, which joined the Sun Fun Beach Run and Family Festival by the Sea as North Myrtle Beach events.

Saturday’s historic parade is always a huge crowd-pleaser, and the 2005 Wendy’s Sun Fun Parade was no exception. In addition to numerous floats, marching bands, beauty queens and local celebrities, this year saw the addition of giant, colorful balloon figures, such as a sun, turtle and fish. Ripley’s Aquarium won first place in the float competition, followed by Burroughs & Chapin Company in second place and Lakewood Camping Resort in third.

The Paris High School Marching Tigers all the way from Paris, Ill., took home the Division A award in the band competition.

Syndicated radio co-hosts John Boy and Billy were parade grand marshals and also received a star on the Sun Fun Celebrity Boardwalk, along with longtime festival officials Marilyn Chewning and Capt. V.W. Strickland.

Team Mouk of Myrtle Beach won first-place in the Sun Fun Beach Volleyball Tournament in Surfside Beach, part of Surfside Super Sunday. Second place went to Side Out of Albemarle, N.C., and Seaweed of Wilmington, N.C., took third.

Other events during the festival included contests for best sandcastle, best sun tan, best legs, biggest bubble and watermelon and hotdog eating contests, just to name a few.

The five-day festival, which ran June 2-6, culminated Monday with The Sun News Sun Fun Kids Fair at Fuller Park in Surfside Beach, an event geared toward children 12 and younger.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Longtime Sun Fun Festival officials Marilyn Chewning and retired Capt. V.W. Strickland each will be honored with a star on the Sun Fun Celebrity Boardwalk this year for their contributions to the annual event.

The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Sun Fun Festival Council made the announcement and presented plaques to the honorees at a recent gathering in the chamber’s Oak Street office.

“It is our privilege to induct Marilyn and Capt. Strickland as Sun Fun Celebrity Boardwalk honorees,” said Stephen Greene, vice president of festivals and special events for the chamber. “They have been a positive influence and contributed significantly to the festival and the Grand Strand community.”

Chewning, former vice president of community programs and events at the chamber, retired in 2004 after 34 years with the organization – longer than any other employee. He began his career with the police department in 1955 and retired from full-time duty in 1983. Since then, he has served as a part-time officer, assisting with various special events and assignments.

The stars honoring Chewning and Strickland, along with celebrity honorees John Boy and Billy, will be unveiled during a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 3, in front of the Myrtle Beach Pavilion.

Bill Gordon and Billy Segalla comprise the Iron Eagle Aerobatic Team. They fly Super Christen Eagle I aircraft powered by 320-horse power engines, modified from original 200-hp Lycoming engines. The planes’ cruising speed at 200 hp is 200 miles per hour.

One of only six Yak 54s flying in the world, the aircraft is nearly twice the size of other monoplanes and capable of executing “high G” turns, multiple rolls, gyroscopic tumbles and other maneuvers.

Maj. Jim “Penny” Varden is an A-10 pilot in the U.S. Air Force who flew more than 25 missions over Iraq in 1997-1998. In his spare time, he participates in air shows, flying a Pitts plane from master designer Curtis Pitts. Also flying a Pitts at this air show will be Scott Gerow of Wilmington, N.C. Sun Fun Pageant Becoming Preliminary to Miss USA

Jan. 5, 2005
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MYRTLE BEACH , S.C. – The Myrtle Beach area’s Miss Sun Fun Pageant will become a preliminary event to the Miss USA Pageant, and a new Miss Teen Sun Fun USA will be added to the annual Sun Fun Festival® lineup.

Directing both pageants will be Paula Miles, who has been associated with Miss USA preliminary pageants for more than 25 years. Currently, she is the state director of the Miss South Carolina USA, Miss North Carolina USA and Miss Louisiana USA pageants, including the Miss Teen divisions of each. Miss USA is a subsidiary of the Miss Universe Organization.

“Having the Miss Sun Fun Pageant become a preliminary event to Miss USA is definitely a feather in our cap,” said Stephen Greene, vice president of festivals and special events for the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the Sun Fun Festival. “It brings added prestige to the festival, which will help us achieve our goal of making Sun Fun one of the best festivals in the country.”

A former resident of Myrtle Beach who now lives in Aiken, Miles has fond memories of Sun Fun. “I'm thrilled to be affiliated with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce by working with the 2005 Miss Sun Fun Pageant,” she said. “I was raised in Myrtle Beach, and my father was the chairman of the Sun Fun Festival back in the 1950s. My sister [Janice McDonald] was Miss Sun Fun in 1978. Having worked with the Miss Universe Organization for more than 25 years, I'm thrilled to welcome Miss Sun Fun to the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA system.”

The 54th annual Sun Fun Festival® is set for June 2-6. Pageant dates have not been announced, but both the Miss Sun Fun USA and Miss Teen Sun Fun USA finals will take place the same evening.
